Banned Books Week underway

Sorry, we were a bit slow to celebrate this year! Busy times!

For starters, please check out our freshly updated Banned Books Week Guide right here. It will be available through October 9, 2021.

Here are this year’s top 5 titles (hyperlinks indicate that Haggerty Library has them):

  1. George, by Alex Gino
  2. Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds
  3. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely
  4. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
  5. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Learn more from the links in our Banned Books Week guide!

Each year people wonder, do books actually get banned? If you didn’t see the coverage from earlier this year, read about the Central York School District in Pennsylvania, and their efforts to ban all antiracism or “critical race theory” titles. They succeeded…until just recently!

Make sure to read a banned book this year. You likely already have!

National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month | Librarian to Librarian

This celebration, running September 15 – October 15, honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Learn about Mount Mary’s status as a federal Hispanic-Serving Institution.

Find the month’s official site (which explains, among other things, why the month starts midway through), plus a variety of library resources and websites in our Hispanic Heritage Month Guide!
